As a student, you've got a lot on your plate - we get it. Classes, assignments, and social life are all important, but if you're reading this, climate change is probably on your mind too - and it is important!

With many students choosing to live at Suen Chi Sun Hall, your dorm life can actually have a big impact on our planet. Did you know that the yearly energy use of a typical dorm room can create as much greenhouse gas pollution as driving a car over 250,000 kilometers?

The good news is that even small changes can make a difference. If just one in 10 students adopted energy-saving habits, we could prevent tons of climate-warming carbon pollution and it also saves you some money (after all, you are paying for things such as aircon, food, laundry, etc.).

Here are some simple ideas to help you do your part:

Conserve Heating and Cooling

Air-conditioning is the biggest energy hog in your dorm. Consider setting it a bit higher to save energy. Never leave windows open when the air-con (or heater) is running, and on hot days, keep the curtains closed to block the sun's heat.

In winter, this helps keep the cold out too. If you spot any broken windows or cracks, let the Hall Management Office know.

Light Efficiently

Turn off lights whenever you leave the room. If you decorate with fairy lights, make sure those are LEDs.

Unplug Everything

Appliances keep using power even when turned off. A power strip lets you plug everything in and easily cut the power with one switch.

Don't Make Your Screens Work Too Hard

For your computer, look for the energy-saving mode. If you're buying a new one, choose an Energy Star certified model.

Reduce Water Use

Run the laundry only with full loads. Wash clothes in cold water and try using a drying rack instead of the dryer, which uses a surprising amount of energy.

Save the Food

Food waste creates emissions when it rots in landfills. Take only what you can eat at a time, and keep reusable containers for leftovers.

Create a Movement

Talk to your peers about making the dorm more energy-efficient. Join or start an environmental club on campus. When you team up with other students who care about climate change, you can make a real difference beyond your dorm room.

Remember, every little bit counts. Let's make Suen Chi Sun Hall a leader in sustainable living at HKU!
